Does age intimidate guys?

So I am one year older than the guy i like. He is a grade under me. (my friends call me a cougar...)lol but for some reason I have troubles talking to him. I am normally never intimidated by anyone younger than me. We talk, but he is never the one to start the conversation. Are guys intimidated by older girls? Is it possible that he is just as scared as me?
