How should I decorate my room?

I recently moved into a house where the desk and wardrobe and both nailed pretty tightly to the wall. Unfortunately, the desk is black and the wardrobe white, so I'm finding it very hard to match my bed, dresser, and nightstand, etc. with it. Any interior decorators or creative people want to give suggestions as to what kind of color scheme I should use? I decided to buy a birch nightstand to neutralize and complement the black and white, but have no idea what to do with the bed and dresser. My comforter and sheets are light blue if that is any help.
